As the Lok Sabha Election 2024 draws near, preparations are underway for the first phase of voting on April 19th. Schools and colleges in several states and union territories across India will remain closed on this day to accommodate the polling process and ensure the safety of students.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the election schedule, with voting to be conducted in seven phases. The voting dates are as follows: April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1. The counting of votes will take place on June 4.

In preparation for the elections, schools and colleges that serve as polling stations will be closed on the respective dates of polling. This closure allows for the setup of voting booths and facilitates a smooth voting process. Additionally, in sensitive areas, schools and colleges may close a few days before the election to ensure student safety.


The first phase of voting on April 19 will cover 102 seats across 21 states and union territories. Here is a list of the states and union territories where schools and colleges will be closed on April 19th:

  1. Andhra Pradesh - 2 seats
  2. Assam - 5 seats
  3. Bihar - 4 seats
  4. Chhattisgarh - 1 seat
  5. Madhya Pradesh - 6 seats
  6. Maharashtra - 5 seats
  7. Manipur - 2 seats
  8. Meghalaya - 2 seats
  9. Mizoram - 1 seat
  10. Nagaland - 1 seat
  11. Rajasthan - 12 seats
  12. Sikkim - 1 seat
  13. Tamil Nadu - 39 seats
  14. Tripura - 1 seat
  15. Uttar Pradesh - 8 seats
  16. Uttarakhand - 5 seats
  17. West Bengal - 3 seats
  18. Andaman and Nicobar Islands - 1 seat
  19. Jammu & Kashmir - 1 seat
  20. Lakshadweep - 1 seat
  21. Puducherry - 1 seat
