Telangana's Karimnagar district is set to see polling activity as the Lok Sabha elections draw closer each day, with the Election Commission of India set to announce dates for the nationwide polls any time now.

One of the Telugu state's 33 districts, Karimnagar is an erstwhile Congress stronghold, with the Bharat Rashtra Samithi and the Bharatiya Janata Party taking the seat away from the Gandhi-led outfit in recent years.

The seat is currently held by the BJP's Bandi Sanjay, who snagged it from the BRS in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Karimnagar Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Dates
Telangana will vote in a single phase on May 13 for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections due to its limited number of seats.

In the past, the district has gone to the polls on April 11, with counting taking place on May 23 and results being announced on the same day.

Results for the Telangana district are expected to follow past patterns, with at least a month's time in between the day people vote and when their votes are tallied by the Election Commission. With an April date looking increasingly likely, counting and results will likely be in May.

Karimnagar Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Candidates
The two major parties in the district - BJP and BRS - have both decided to field their regular fighters, with the saffron party opting for incumbent Bandi Sanjay who is also the National General Secretary of the party. BRS, meanwhile, has decided to field Boianapalli Vinod Kumar, the man who lost to Bandi Sanjay, five years ago. The Congress is yet to announce a candidate for the seat.

Karimnagar Lok Sabha Elections 2019
Five years ago, in 2019, Karimnagar saw a new face at the helm, with BJP's Bandi Sanjay winning the mandate, while BRS' Boianapalli Vinod Kumar came second, short by some 90,000 votes. The loss in Karimnagar particularly stung for BRS, as the seat was once held by former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.

A decade ago, the BRS and Vinod Kumar snatched the seat away from the Congress, with a mammoth two lakh vote margin, bagging 44.93% of the vote in the 11 lakh voter constituency.
