Election Commission’s financial intelligence team to map all Lok Sabha seats

New Delhi: The EC’s multi-department committee on election intelligence will aim to map almost every Lok Sabha constituency to check transportation of smuggled goods, drugs and liquor, besides cash and fake currency.

This committee will hold its first meeting on Friday and top most on its agenda is “curbing covert expenditure” by candidates and political parties in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, ET has learnt.

More than 15 agencies have been brought in by the EC at the committee to operate in a coordinated manner to check economic offences during elections. The heads of these agencies are expected to participate in the meeting.


ET was first to report on the EC setting up a high-powered committee with heads of financial and enforcement agencies on board to check illegal money flow during the polls.

As per the agenda, the enforcement agencies will be requested to work in close coordination to check and freeze flow of goods and illegal money by strong deterrence and watch at seaports, inter-state borders and along the international borders.

The meeting will also sensitise law enforcement agencies on the need for sharing intelligence, especially on economic offences. The EC has also emphasised the need for each enforcement agency to institute district, state and national-level coordination plans and roadmap for this.

The idea is to cover all areas related to illegal money flow in elections, from generation of such funds to the movement of funds across borders and states and its ultimate distribution as bribe to influence voters ahead of elections.
