Do women need to file for a new voting card if they get married?

If the wife is a voter in the same Assembly constituency as the husband but needs only to change her address then, she needs to fill in Form-8A for a change of residence within the same Assembly constituency.

If a women is a voter for the first time after marriage then she will have to fill in Form-6 for enrollment as a new voter. In case the women is already a voter, but not in the same Assembly constituency, then she will need to fill in Form-6 for change of residence.

If the wife is a voter in the same Assembly constituency as the husband but needs only to change her address then, she needs to fill in Form-8A for a change of residence within the same Assembly constituency. The wife has to fill Form 8A that allows her to shift from one place of residence to another place of residence within the same constituency.

As proof of residence, she can submit a copy of her marriage certificate or a copy of the marriage invitation card.


How to submit Form-6

Online application
Step 1. Log on to www.eci.nic.in or Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) website of the state where the new voter ordinarily resides. Click on tab 'Online Voter Registration'
Step 2. Sign up to obtain a username and password.

Step 3. Upload one passport-size color photo in the space mentioned.
Step 4. Upload the proof of residence and age. In case you are unable to upload, the Booth Level Officer (BLO) may also collect the documents from your house.

How to submit Form-8A

You will have to fill in the form that will include details like name, the current address of your ordinary residence where you have shifted.
The application needs to be addressed to the Electoral Registration Officer of the constituency in which transposition of the relevant entry is required.
All details to be filled in and submitted to the Electoral Registration office.

The form can be obtained from the Electoral Registration Office/Assistant ERO/designated locations/authorized centers.
