New Delhi: The Congress on Friday announced the candidature of Karti Chidambaram from Sivaganga constituency in Tamil Nadu despite serious corruption charges and investigations against him. Karti, son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, faced a crushing defeat in the same constituency in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. This time, he, like other Congress nominees from Tamil Nadu, is hoping that the DMK-led alliance will come to his rescue.

In Maharashtra, the Congress has fielded two former Shiv Sena leaders. In place of Congress’ Lok Sabha MP Rajiv Satav in Hingoli, the party has fielded ex-Sena MP Subhash Wankhede, who had fought and lost to Satav by about 1,800 votes in 2014. There has been murmurs of Satav, whom Rahul Gandhi had appointed AICC incharge of Gujarat, opting out of the contest, especially after he is believed to have lost the patronage of Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan. The AICC has also fielded Subhash Dhanokar, who recently resigned as Sena MLA, from Chandrapur by replacing Vinayak Bangade, whose candidature was announced a few days back.

The other notable names among the 10 candidates Congress announced include LS MP Tariq Anwar (Katihar), ex-BJP MP Uday Singh (Purnea), Mohd Jawed (Kishanganj) from Bihar, Congress’ RS MP BK Hariprasad (Bangalore South) and Farooq Mir (Baramulla).
