Baramulla Lok Sabha Result: Ex-J&K CM Omar Abdullah concedes defeat to jailed candidate Engineer Rashid

National Conference leader from Baramulla and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah conceded defeat to his counterpart Abdul Rashid Sheikh alias Engineer Rashid.

As per latest ECI data, the jailed leader from Baramulla garnered a whopping 2,91,610 votes, as Abdullah trailed by 1,34,705.

Taking to X, Abdullah congratulated Engineer Rashid for his victory in North Kashmir.


"I think it’s time to accept the inevitable. Congratulations to Engineer Rashid for his victory in North Kashmir. I don’t believe his victory will hasten his release from prison nor will the people of North Kashmir get the representation they have a right to but the voters have spoken and in a democracy that’s all that matters," he said.

It is only the first Lok Sabha election in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370. The five seats in Jammu and Kashmir underwent polling in five phases.

While Rashid leads the Awami Ittehad Party, he is contesting these elections as an Independent.

Rashid became the first mainstream leader to be held under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, after he was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2019 on charges of terror-funding activities.

The former MLA had won the Langate assembly segment in 2008 and 2014 and also unsuccessfully contested the 2019 parliamentary elections.
