This election season, there have been two promises linked to the incomes of upper castes. First is the BJP’s promise to implement a 10% quota for the poor among the “non-reserved”, strengthening the idea that the economically weaker among the upper castes need support, and the second is the Samajwadi Party’s promise to impose an extra 2% tax on the richest, who, it says, are uniformly upper caste.
