GUWAHATI: Ahead of the crucial third phase of polls in Assam, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has launched a fullblown attack against Congress alleging that the party breached its promise and fielded strong candidates against three AIUDF MPs.

AIUDF stated that on citizenship amendment bill Congress is talking in several voices. While in 2014 it supported Citizenship to Hindu Bengalis and Buddhists from Bangladesh, now it is opposing it.

AIUDF has three MPs contesting from Dhubri, Karimganj and Barpeta. While Karimganj went to polls on Thursday, Dhubri and Barpeta will go to polls on April 23.

AIUDF chief and Dhubri Lok Sabha MP, Badruddin Ajmal said: “Ahead of the polls, five Congress top leaders promised that they will put up weak candidates against the AIUDF in these three constituencies, however, Congress breached the promised and fielded strong candidates. Committed to assurance we did not field candidate in five parliamentary seats.”

Congress has however refuted that the party had any arrangement with AIUDF.

BJP president Amit Shah during an election in Morigaon recently stated former chief minister Tarun Gogoi for poll prospects of his son, Gaurav Gogoi who contested from Koliabor, has surrendered before AIUDF.

Denying the allegation that there is a tacit understanding between AIUDF and Congress, former Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi said that this is false propaganda as BJP is worried that Congress is going to get more seats in Assam in comparison to 2014 polls.

Gogoi alleged that there is a bonhomie between BJP and AIUDF.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal said, “We have been saying that Congress and AIUDF are two sides of the same coin and Ajmal’s revelations prove that they had an arrangement.”
