Assam: AIUDF invokes 36-year-old Nellie massacre

GUWAHATI: Ahead of crucial third phase polls in Assam, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has brought the 36 year old Nellie massacre in the electioneering in minority dominated Dhubri and Barpeta lok Sabha constituencies which going to polls on April 23.

The massacre which took place in 1983 during the anti-foreigners movement claimed lives of over 2000 people in Nagaon district.

Addressing a rally in Barpeta, AIUDF chief and Dhubri Lok Sabha MP, Badruddin Ajmal on Saturday said, “Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leaders Kumar Deepak Das, Bhrigu Kumar Phukan, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and Atul Bora orchestrated Nellie massacre where thousands of people including children was killed.”


While Das is AGP’s candidate for Barpeta seat, Bhrigu Kumar Phukan was the home minister in the AGP government, Mahanta was two time former chief minister and Bora is the presently minister in the BJP led government and president of AGP.

AGP is an ally of BJP in Assam. Das however said, “Ajmal is making such statements as he is losing ground in these constituencies.”

Ajmal also said, “If Narendra Modi becomes Prime minister again he will send you to Bangladesh,” Ajmal told public in the rally in Barpeta.”
