GUWAHATI: As the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) president Badruddin Ajmal continues to nudge the Congress in Assam for an alliance for the Lok Sabha polls, a total of 83 Congress leaders, including all three MPs, have sought party tickets for 14 seats in Assam.

This comes even as a bitter war of words has been going on between Assam's Congress president Bhupen Kumar Borah and Ajmal. The Congress party had earlier said that there would be no alliance with the AIUDF for the Lok Sabha polls.

While Nagaon MP Pradyut Bordoloi has sought a ticket from Nagaon, Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi, who lost his constituency following the recently carried out delimitation exercise, has sought a ticket from Nagaon, Kaziranga, and Jorhat seats. Barpeta MP Abdul Khaleque has filed his papers, however, he has not specified the constituency. Rakibul Hussain, the deputy leader of the opposition in the state assembly and a former minister has also sought a ticket from Nagaon constituency.

The application process began on December 11 and saw 83 members seeking party tickets. The Dhubri seat has 13 applicants while the Kokrajhar seat has only two applicants.

The AIUDF has been making repeated overtures to Congress to enter into a seat arrangement for the 2024 polls. Both Congress and AIUDF had fought the 2021 Assam assembly in alliance but soon after the polls, Congress snapped ties with the party. In 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had won 3 seats while the AIUDF got one. The BJP had increased its tally from 7 to 9 in the last general elections The political landscape of Assam has changed significantly since the last Lok Sabha elections after almost 27 years as the Election Commission published the delimitation of assembly and parliamentary constituencies.
