Lord Jagannath is Modi Bhakt: BJP's Sambit Patra faces backlash over remark, apologises
BJP leader Sambit Patra recently faced widespread criticism for stating that "Lord Jagannath is Modi's bhakt" during an interview. Patra clarified that it was a "slip of the tongue" and announced a three-day fast as penance. However, BJD leader VK Pandian expressed concern for Patra's health given the current weather conditions.

Pandian's Advice Amidst Controversy

VK Pandian, party chairman and BJD leader, advised Patra to maintain his health during the fast, considering the extreme heat and dust. "He should eat properly and take care. Three days before elections, he should not faint. He is a doctor, he should know what to do," Pandian told ANI.

BJD's Stance on Religion and Politics

Pandian emphasized that the BJD does not engage in political maneuvering over religious matters, especially concerning Lord Jagannath, who is central to Odisha's identity. "Lord Jagannath can never be escalated and Lord Jagannath should always be above everything else," he stated, reinforcing the party's stance of keeping religion and politics separate.

Odisha Chief Minister Navin Patnaik has consistently advocated for keeping religious figures out of political discourse. "Chief Minister has always felt that we should keep our God outside politics. They are immortal and we are mortal. Why should we mix both?" Pandian remarked, reflecting on the public sentiment that Patra's comment had hurt.

Dragging of Lord Jagannath into politics not fair: Pandian
Pandian criticized the BJP for involving Lord Jagannath in political rhetoric, which he deemed inappropriate and against the sentiments of the people of Odisha. "Lord Jagannath has been dragged into politics so much in this election which is not fair," Pandian commented, urging political leaders to focus on their work rather than religious figures during campaigns.

Sambit Patra's Remark
The controversy began when Patra described Lord Jagannath as a devotee of PM Modi, which he later retracted as a verbal misstep. This remark coincided with Prime Minister Modi's roadshow in Puri and subsequent public rallies, highlighting the heightened political activity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, set to conclude with results on June 4.
