Lok Sabha polls: EC summons Andhra chief secretary, DGP over poll violence

NEW DELHI: Taking serious note of post-poll violence in Andhra Pradesh, the Election Commission has summoned the state chief secretary and DGP to New Delhi on Thursday to personally explain reasons for the "failure of the administration" in containing such violence.

They are also likely to be asked about "pre-emptive steps" being taken to avoid any such incidents in the future.

Post-poll violence was reported in parts of Andhra Pradesh after simultaneous Lok Sabha and assembly polls in the state concluded on May 13.


In its communication to the state officials, the poll panel reminded them that the model code of conduct (MCC) is still in effect. It also pointed out how the commission has repeatedly emphasised that there is no scope of violence in democracy.

Leaders of the ruling YSRCP and opposition TDP have levelled allegations against each other for the incidents.
