Nagaland Election Results 2023: Neiphiu Rio set to be Nagaland's chief minister for record fifth term
Nagaland Election Result 2023: Nagaland political stalwart and its longest serving chief minister Neiphiu Rio is set to assume office as chief minister for a fifth consecutive term after a convincing win for his party and its ally, the BJP. Together, the two parties have secured 33 seats in the 60-member Nagaland assembly.
The ruling NDPP-BJP alliance got majority in the 60-member Nagaland Assembly by winning 33 seats on Thursday, election commission declared. The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) won 21 seats while its alliance partner got 12 seats, the EC said.
The Assembly polls were held on Monday in 59 of the 60 assembly constituencies in Nagaland, where 85.9 per cent polling was registered. Nagaland Assembly has the unique feature of having no opposition as all parties in the 60-member assembly have backed the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party-led government.
Five years ago in 2018, Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the BJP alliance ended the 15-year rule of Naga People’s Front (NPF). The NDDP-BJP alliance is hopeful of return to power as all exit polls have predicted a big win for the alliance in the Christian-majority hill state.
In 2018, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) emerged as the largest party, winning 26 out of 60 seats, but failed to form the government. Its pre-poll alliance with BJP collapsed before the election and the saffron party, with its 12 seats, instead turned to the newly formed Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), which had won 18 seats, to form the government.
Congress, despite having won several outright majorities in the past, has seen its seat share continuously decline and, in 2018, it failed to win a single seat.Though NPF has enjoyed several years of dominance since 2003, it is only contesting 22 seats with more than 20 MLAs having quit the party to join NDPP, led by three-time CM Neiphiu Rio.

- The Congress finds itself depleted and the NPF’s strength eroded over the last five years. A group of regional and non-regional parties claim that they could be potential “kingmakers” after the polls.Congress contested 23 seats in the state.
- Naga People's Front (NPF) leader Kuzholuzo Nienu has said that the party is open to post-poll arrangements. Interestingly, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) has fielded 16 candidates.

By virtue of the result of her constituency being declared earlier in the day, Jakhalu became the first woman MLA in the Nagaland Assembly. Nagaland Election Results 2023 LIVE: NDPP-BJP alliance eying big win
- In Nagaland, the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) led by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio contested 40 seats while its ally BJP put up candidates 20 seats in the on the 60-member House. Akuluto seat was won uncontested by BJP.
