NEW DELHI: Workers should undergo compulsory safety training to make their work places accident free, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment Oscar Fernandes said on Sunday.

"Training should be compulsory for all workers in safety aspects so that work environment could be accident free," Fernandes said here while distributing annual Viswakarma Rashtriya Puraskars and National Safety awards for the year 2006.

"If we will make the work environment accident free and reduce the accident ratio then we will gain respect around the globe," the minister said.

He gave the slogan of "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Kamgar" and said, "It is the labourers who have put India on the path of development."

Emphasising on the need for skilled labour, he said, "We, at present, have five per cent skilled labour whereas nations like Korea have 80 per cent. We have to increase this work force."
