With food inflation over 10%, government must examine commodity prices: MS Swaminathan
With food inflation hovering over the 10 per cent mark, government must examine prices "commodity by commodity
Speaking to reporters here, Swaminathan, credited as the man behind India's Green Revolution, said demand-supply gap, seasonal availability of certain vegetables and fruits and post-harvest issues are spurring inflation.
Asked why food inflation continued to remain high despite government reporting 'record wheat and rice production,' he said prices of these do come down but those of milk, vegetables and pulses remained on the higher side.
"Demand-supply gap, seasonal availability of some vegetables and post-harvest issues result in inflation. You have to study and breakdown inflation to deal with it. Government must examine commodity by commodity and formulate policies," he said. National Horticulture Mission should map "hotspots" of inflation, he added.
Farmers, however, were not the beneficiaries of inflation, he said.
Swaminathan also called for an integrated coastal management programme since 25 per cent of India's population lives in coastal cities and towns.
Earlier, the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation and infrastructure firm MARG announced a Knowledge Connectivity Partnership, to disseminate information to farmers, fishermen and Self Help Groups in Nagappattinam (Tamil Nadu) and Karaikal (Puducherry) on matters such as climate and others.
