Waste to be send back to country of origin: Govt

The state government viewed the issue seriously as the state had witnessed spread of different types of viral fever, in recent times.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Taking a serious view of Kochi being made a "dumping ground" for sanitary and plastic waste from New York, the Kerala government on Friday made it clear that the containers with the waste would be send back to the country of origin.

State Pollution Control Board was examining the documents of the importer 'Kochin Kadallas" to see whether the licence could be cancelled for "wayward handling" of the import process, state Health Minister P K Sreemathi and Pollution Control Board Chairman C Rajmohan told a press meet here.

The Minister said three containers that came from a company called Belson Corporation were found to have different types of waste during an examination by customs officials at Kochin Port earlier this month.

The Centre would be apprised of the situation to take necessary steps to prevent dumping of waste in future, the minister said adding the state government viewed the issue seriously as the state had witnessed spread of different types of viral fever, in recent times.

The containers would be returned to the country of origin at the cost of the importer. It was suspected that the importer might have received money for bringing the waste from that country even though it was mentioned in the document that value of the shipment was USD 130 dollars per tonne, the minister said.
