Visa issuance to be fast-tracked for boosting tourism: Pranab

NEW DELHI: In an effort to boost tourism inflow into the country, the Government is planning to simplify and fast-track issuance of visa by making use of electronic data management system.
"We are taking steps to promptly simplify the procedure and fast-track issuance of visa by using electronic and digital data management system," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee said, addressing a function to give away the National Tourism Awards 2006-07 here this evening.
Mukherjee's assurance on fast-tracking issuance of visa came even as Union Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni, who shared the dais with him, said visa on arrival should be made a reality soon.
"We haven't got all that we want. We want to have visa on arrival when our airports are ready by 2010. We are grateful that long-term visa with multiple entry has been facilitated," Soni said.
Identifying the tourism sector as having a huge potential to contribute to the growth of the economy and provide employment, Mukherjee said there should be close coordination between the different ministries and departments.
He informed that the Government was working on an enabling regulatory mechanism for the tourism sector so that it could provide world-class service.
Mukherjee said India, with its nine per cent growth rate and the Commonwealth Games scheduled to be held in Delhi in 2010, was poised for a boost to tourism and also made a call for transforming the "Incredible India" slogan into "Irresistible India".
