The minister said this during meetings with officers across the country to gather feedback on the income tax department's new faceless assessment and appeal mechanism, a TOI report said quoting sources.

The government would go for improvements in the mechanism after going through the feedback from tax officials. The meetings were held in Delhi and Mumbai.


The faceless assessment and appeal mechanism was objected to by a section of income tax officials, but the government it was the best to increase transparency and accountability, besides sparing assessees of unnecessary scrutiny and questioning during a face-to-face meetings.

Sitharaman said this would help better compliance even on the GST platform, without the need to be intrusive. The GST Network matches filings with other data such as income tax filings to catch bogus claims.
