US restores duty-free access for Indian, Pak

WASHINGTON: Citing progress on intellectual property and worker rights, US President George W Bush has restored duty-free access for some Indian and Pakistani exports to the US.

In a proclamation, Bush expressed satisfaction with India and Pakistan's intellectual property protection and resumed Generalized Special Preference (GSP) or duty-free treatment for some Indian and Pakistani exports to the US.

"After a review of the current situation in India and taking into account the factors set out in section 502 of the 1974 Act, in particular section 502(c)(5), I have determined that India has made progress in providing adequate and effective protection of intellectual property rights. Accordingly, I have determined to terminate the suspension of India's duty-free treatment for certain articles under the GSP," he said yesterday.

He said the US reviewed the current situation in Pakistan and determined that the country had taken or is taking steps to afford workers in that country internationally recognized worker rights and is determined to restore Islamabad's eligibility for certain articles.
