Top American officials in charge of public transport have offered support to the Maharashtra government to build transport infrastructure in the Mumbai metropolitan region.

MUMBAI: Top American officials in charge of public transport have offered support to the Maharashtra government to build transport infrastructure in the Mumbai metropolitan region.
A high level US delegation led by Sherry Little, Deputy Administrator of Federal Transit Administration of US government is currently in city to examine different projects.
The delegation also held a meeting with top brass of the state government for interaction. The meeting was organised by Anand Jain, Chairman of Navi Mumbai SEZ which is developing one of the largest SEZs.
According to presentation made by P R K Murthy, chief of transport division at Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authroity (MMRDA), an investment of over USD 50 billion would be required to build transport infrastructure and develop the mainland across the harbour.
A proposal doing the rounds is to connect the proposed metro railway network to the mainland across the harbour being developed.
Vinay Bansal, top official of Reliance group said MMRDA is the most suitable to act as a nodal agency and it should draw a time bound programme and come up with concrete proposals.
MMRDA has projected the population of Mumbai Metro region to hit 3.4 crore mark by 2031.
As per projections, the region will require a new metro network of 450 km and new road length of 1,513 km.
The various projects are proposed to be financed by private sector to the extent of 40 per cent, users 28 per cent, 10 per cent by way of development charges and 12 per cent borrowing.
