UP withdraws new agriculture policy

Bowing to all round criticism for allowing contract farming, the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday withdrew the policy.

LUCKNOW: Bowing to all round criticism of its new agriculture policy, which allows contract farming, the Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday withdrew the policy.

The decision to withdraw the new agriculture policy was taken by the state cabinet in its meeting today, Chief Minister Mayawati told reporters here.

She said the decision had been prompted by an intelligence report which pointed out that a majority of farmers was opposed to the new policy.

The state intelligence gave me a report last evening stating that as much as 60 per cent of farmers was opposed to the policy, she said.

The BSP government did not want to take any decision that went against farmers' interests, she said.

The government on August 3 announced its new agriculture policy which allowed contract farming.

The policy drew flak not only from farmers' groups but also from opposition parties which demanded its withdrawal.

The Chief Minister denied reports that the government proposed an amendment to the Land Ceiling Act, seeking to decrease the upper limit of the ceiling.
