The Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on Friday passed the UP Value Added Tax Bill 2008 by a voice vote amid stiff opposition by BJP and Samajwadi Party members.

LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha on Friday passed the UP Value Added Tax Bill 2008 by a voice vote amid stiff opposition by BJP and Samajwadi Party members.

The bill was tabled in the house by Urban Development and Institutional Finance Minister Nakul Dubey.

BJP and SP members opposed the bill saying that implementation of VAT in the state would result in increase in the prices of essential commodities.

The members of the two parties later staged a walkout from the house in protest against passage of the bill.
