UP govt decides to buy potatoes from farmers
UP government has decided to purchase potato from the farmers at a cost of Rs 250 per quintal by setting up purchase centres in 29 districts under the market intervention scheme.
The decision was taken at a high level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Mayawati last evening, official sources said here on Saturday.
The purchase centres would be setup through NAFED and state government owned agencies like PCF, UPAGRO, Horticulture Production, Co-operative marketing federation and others, sources said.
"The agencies would be provided adequate working capital for purchasing potatoes and if they would suffer any losses due to the purchase, the state government and the Centre would share the burden equally", they added.
The scheme will be implemented in Lucknow, Mainpuri, Etah, Bareilly and districts of western UP including Meerut, Saharanpur and Bulandshahar.
Meanwhile, to encourage the export of potato from the state, the government has also been decided to give a subsidy of 25 per cent or Rs 25 per quintal, whichever is less, on the transportation of potato being exported to a distance beyond 500 kms.
Claims for the subsidy could be made before the district horticulture officer.
A control room has been set up in the Horticulture directorate for helping farmers and the District Magistrates have been directed to constitute a team to check storage facilities in the cold storages.
