NEW DELHI: India should have a uniform structure of road tax for vehicles across states, a government panel set up to recommend transport reforms has proposed.

A uniform tax structure will put a check on people registering their vehicles in low tax states and running them in other states, the group of ministers (GoM) on transport constituted by the road transport and highways ministry said in a meeting held in Guwahati on Thursday.

“This would also bring necessary relief to genuine cases requiring transfer of vehicles,” said a ministry official, who did not wish to be identified.

In order to promote alternative fuel for vehicles, the panel has proposed liberalisation of permit system for electric vehicles. It has also recommended raising the tax on diesel vehicles by 2% while lowering the tax on electric vehicles.

The panel has also recommended a national bus and taxi permit on the lines of such a permit for goods transport.
