Unified Transport Authority for Mumbai formulated
The Maharashtra government has constituted a Unified Mumbai Metropolitan Transport Authority (UMMTR) to oversee the integrated development of various modes of transport in Mumbai.
"The authority is set up to bring better coordination among MMRDA, BEST, ST and all transport institutes," deputy secretary transport J M Chavan told the media.
UMMTA will be chaired by Chief Secretary and the work will be under Mumbai Metropolitan Planning Committee. The authority has 24 other members, including Additional Chief Secretary from urban development department, Chief Secretaries from planning, revenue, transport, General Manager of Railways and the BMC Commissioner.
Prime Minster Manmohan Singh had suggested the formulation of a UMMTA for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
"The authority is unique in the country and will deal with transportation problems, new projects, coordinating all government bodies in transport sector, while arranging finance for the projects in MMR," said Chavan.
"The UMMTA is soon going to have its first meeting for discussing the major issues related to transportation in MMR," he said.
Globally, cities like London, New York and Singapore already have such a system in operation. The authority would create a sub-system for road, rail, waterways and air transportation, which includes rail network, parking lots, private and public modes of transport.
