'Unified food law to boost sector'
Government said on Saturday that the proposed unified food law would remove multiplicity of authorities governing the food sector by bringing all regulators under a single authority.
"The uniform food law will be soon introduced at the Parliament and pave way for setting up an autonomous single regulator Food Authority of India (FAI)," Union Food Processing Minister Subodh Kant Sahay said at a workshop organised by Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS).
"FAI will act as a coordinator between various ministries presently regulating the sector in their individual capacity," he said.
The union cabinet has also approved the draft Integrated Food Law bill to be introduced in the Parliament.
Assuring the proposed law would cater to the issues concerning various channels from the top industries to the small farmer, Sahay said the apex authority would also focus on research related activities.
Attributing the huge agricultural loss of Rs 50,000 crore to absence of well-developed food processing industries, the minister said the annual wastages could be transformed into economic gains through post harvest management and food processing activities.
RIS in collaboration with Thammasat University of Thailand and some Australian Universities presented a research paper on food safety related issues in India and Thailand.
The research has suggested upgrade of national standards with that of international standards to remain globally competitive in the post WTO regime.
