NEW DELHI: Telecom regulator TRAI is planning to bring out a consultation paper on Next Generation Telecom Network (NGN) to initiate a process that would enable service providers offer voice, video and data at affordable rates on a single platform of internet protocol.

"We will bring out a consultation paper on Next Generation Network... we are studying it at the moment," TRAI chairman Pradip Baijal told PTI.

In July this year, TRAI had issued a study paper on 'Next Generation Networks'. The main issues covered in the paper were need for consideration about NGN by all stakeholders in telecom, among other issues.

It also dealt with positive impact of unification of networks and services on the service providers, as well as consumers, particularly in rural areas and role to be played by regulators and policy makers to facilitate large-scale penetration of NGN for customers benefit.

India's fibre network can be easily converted to NGN and then used for delivering multiple services at cheap costs. In India, telecom networks are not so intensive as developed country's telecom networks. But it has 670,000 route km of optical fibres laid by operators, even in interior areas and the process continues.

BSNL alone has laid optical fibre to 30,000 out of their 35,000 exchanges, thus having a fibre connection down to an average of 20 villages. Keeping in mind the viability of providing services in rural areas, an attractive solution appears to be one which offers multiple service facility at low costs.
