TN to set up commitee to formulate land acquisition policy

The Tamil Nadu government has decided to set up a committee to formulate a land policy and frame necessary guidelines for acquiring lands for industrial parks and SEZs.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu government has decided to set up a committee to formulate a land policy and frame necessary guidelines for acquiring lands for industrial parks and SEZs.

To be headed by the state chief secretary, the committee will also have secretaries of industries, finance and revenue departments as its members. The committee will go into all aspects of land acquisition for setting up SEZs, industries as well as industrial parks, and submit a draft policy, an official release said.

Subsequently, a sub-committee of ministers, to be constituted by chief minister M Karunanidhi, will discuss the draft policy and submit recommendations to the state Cabinet for approval. The decision to formulate a land policy comes after the protests by farmers and political parties over the indiscriminate acquisition of lands to promote industries and export units.

In fact the ruling DMK government shelved its plan to develop a satellite township near Chennai due to the protest from its ally PMK.

Recently unveiled industrial policy has envisaged creating a land bank of 10,000 acres over the next five years with quality infrastructure developing for industrial parks.
