TN govt to come out with new policy for SMEs

Tamil Nadu government would come out very soon with a policy on micro, small and medium enterprises, a senior official has said.

TIRUCHIRAPALLI: Tamil Nadu government would come out very soon with a policy on micro, small and medium enterprises, a senior official has said.

The cabinet was discussing the draft policy and the announcement is likely to come out in four to six weeks, M Raman, state Commissioner for Industries and Commerce, told reporters here.

The special focus of the policy draft would be to strengthen infrastructure, enhance industrial space, improve credit flow and upgrade skills among others, he said.

Raman added that the district industry centres would be re-engineered to convert them as knowledge centres, giving a boost to industrial growth in districts.

Plans are afoot on strengthening the infrastructure of industrial estates during the XI plan period and his commissionerate was preparing a blue print for this, he said.

Earlier, addressing a seminar on small and medium enterprises (SMEs), organised by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry here on Saturday, Raman said the government was keen on promoting industrial clusters.

Government was also keen on increasing industrial space across the state and was willing to fund upto 15 per cent of the internal development cost.

The chairman of Tamil Nadu State Council FICCI, Rafeeque Ahmed said that nearly 12 per cent of the country's 3.3 million SMEs were located in Tamil Nadu and therefore "economic viability" was critical to the growth of the state.
