Tech missions in textile, leather and food processing set up

NEW DELHI: The government is likely to set up technology missions for textile, food processing and leather industries to enhance competitiveness of these sectors.
Prime minister Manmohan Singh has accepted setting up of technology missions for the three sectors as recommended by the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, its chairman V Kishnamurthy said.
At a meeting with NMCC members, the prime minister asked the council to suggest the specific areas in manufacturing where government efforts are required to make the sector competitive.
The council will come back to Singh within 15 days with its recommendations in this regard, Krishnamurthy said.
The meeting was also attended by finance minister P Chidambaram, planning commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Tata group chairman Ratan Tata, officials and chambers representatives.
Chidambaram suggested that a body like empowered committee of state finance ministers on VAT be constituted to discuss issues relating to distribution and transmission of power with states, sources said.
The meeting discussed the ways to closely associate ITIs with the industry, Assocham president Anil K Agarwal said.
According to NMCC, the manufacturing sector has to grow at 12-14 per cent per annum to enable economy to grow at 8-9 per cent over the next decade.
The council has come out with a draft report on the National Strategy for Manufacturing. The final report will be prepared within a month, Agarwal said.
