Stay on disinvestment of sugar mills

The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday stayed the proposed disinvestment of 28 cooperative sugar mills and seven distilleries in Uttar Pradesh.

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday stayed the proposed disinvestment of 28 cooperative sugar mills and seven distilleries in Uttar Pradesh.

A division bench comprising Justice Sushil Harkauli and Justice K N Ojha passed the order while hearing a writ petition filed by one Balidan Singh and others.

The petitioners had challenged June six and July two policy decisions of Uttar Pradesh government whereby the disinvestment of these sugar mills and distilleries was mooted on the ground that they were making losses.

Adjourning the case till August 23, following a request in this regard by the Additional Advocate General, the court asked the state government to file its reply by that date.

Passing the order of stay, the court remarked that since the request for adjournment was made by the state government itself, "it would not be appropriate to allow things to be altered to the detriment of the petitioner and also others who may be adversely affected by the decision regarding sale of cooperative sugar mills and distilleries".
