Special Agro-Economic Zone suggested in TN
Dubbing the Tamil Nadu Government's industrial policy as 'inequitable and job-loss driven," PMK, an ally of the ruling DMK, on Saturday presented an alternative model for industrial development in the state.
PMK founder S Ramadoss told reporters that the present industrial development strategy was driven more by foreign direct investment by MNCs and had not accelerated employment generation.
He said IT/ITES industry provide job opportunities only to six per cent of population in the state who had the privilege of receiving university/college education.
"More specifically, it is confined to around 80,000 engineering graduates and 60,000 diploma holders who come out of Polytechnics. This is only a fraction of the work force in the state. This is not inclusive but inequitable development," he added.
As an alternative strategy, Ramadoss suggested establishing Special Agro-Economic Zone, setting up Artisan Cluster units and taking up rural ICT initiatives.
He said all primary, secondary and tertiary sectors in the rural economy should be combined in the agro activity -centred growth strategy carried out by establishing several SAEZs.
Ramadoss also suggested upgrading urban informal economy which include non-regular wage workers, self-employed persons, petty trader and micro entrepreneurs
