Solvent Extractors' body opposes move to ban oilmeal exports

The Solvent Extractors Association of India has urged the government not to ban or restrict export of oilmeals.

MUMBAI : The Solvent Extractors Association of India has urged the government not to ban or restrict export of oilmeals.

"We have have strongly protested the move and have sent a memorandum to Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar, and Minister for Commerce & Industry Kamal Nath," the Solvent Extractors Association of India's Executive Director B V Mehta said here.

A ban or imposing export duty on oilmeals would hit the processing of soybean and other oilseeds, oilcakes and rice bran by the solvent extraction industry and thereby decrease the production of solvent extracted vegetable oils.

"This will lead to higher price for vegetable oils," Mehta said.

Earlier, the animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries department had forwarded the proposal for banning/imposing duty on export of oilmeals linking it to the rise in price of milk due to export of oilmeals.

In its memorandum, the association said that the price of oilmeals/oilcakes is related to price of oilseeds which has gone up due to rise in vegetable oil prices in the domestic and international markets.

If a ban or duty is imposed, it would lead to lesser realisation for oilmeals, thereby putting pressure on edible oil prices, Mehta said.
