Skill India Mission target achieved, 1.07 cr trained till Jan 2021: Govt

Government has achieved its skilling targets with 1.07 crore youth trained by January 2021 under the Skill India Mission, skills development minister Mahendra Nath Pandey said. The government had set a target of training one crore youth between 2016-20 under its flagship scheme the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY).

The scheme comprises short duration skill development training and recognition of prior learning (RPL)) to unemployed youth across the country.

As per the statement tabled by the minister in Rajya Sabha on Friday, 36.04 lakh candidates were trained under short term training (STT) component. Out of this, 18.95 lakh candidates have been placed (2.77 lakh – self-employed, 15.83 lakh – wage employed and 0.35 apprenticeship).


Under the scheme the last tranche of 20% of the total payout to training providers is linked with placement of the certified candidates.

Further, the minister said that based on the learning from implementation of PMKVY 1.0 (2015-16) and 2.0 (2016-20), the skills development ministry has launched PMKVY 3.0 on January 15, 2021 with an objective to train 8 lakh candidates in the ongoing financial year.

“Further, in order to promote entrepreneurship, the National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), is conducting several entrepreneurship development training programmes,” the minister said.

Till December, NISEBUD has provided training to 12.35 lakh candidates through 46,690 entrepreneurship development training programs.

In addition to above short-term training, directorate general of training (DGT) under MSDE is implementing long duration vocational courses through industrial training institutes (ITI) which offer range of one or two years’ vocational and skill training courses covering a large number of economic sectors with an objective to provide skilled workforce to the industry as well as self-employment of youth.

At present, 14,779 ITIs are functional and 72.49 lakh candidates have been enrolled in the last five years, the statement said.
