Sinha to meet industrialists on Budget

finance minister yashwant sinha is slated to meet a group of industrialists for pre-budget consultations early next week. an annual feature, it represents an interface between the industry and the finance ministry before the finalisation of the budget. the meeting is scheduled to take place in the capital on january 8. list of invitees includes all the major business houses, presidents of all major industry chambers and selected industry bigwigs. early indications show that key issues and agendas being forwarded by the respective industry organisations is slated to focus on rationalisation of the tax structure. cii, for instance, would be focusing on issues related to clipping of the corporate tax, elimination of minimum alternate tax (mat), and setting up of a roadmap to a rational custom duty structure. ficci, on the other hand is in the process of gathering further inputs from other associate chambers, associations and associate members. we will be combining these inputs with our pre-budget memorandum to present to the finance minister some of the important areas and issues of concern, says an official at ficci. last year, in a similar meeting issues relating to speeding up of investments in infrastructure and disinvestment, reforms in railways, small-scale industries and labour laws were discussed. ambanis, bajajs, birlas, and tatas feature among the business house invitees. the invites to mr narayan murthy and mr azim premji confirms that the it sector will not be neglected. others include nusli wadia (bombay dyeing), j khattar (maruti), m s banga (hll), n srinivasan (india cements), a m naik (l&t), ashwin dani (asian paints), a g piramal (piramal enterprises), g l raheja (credai), yusuf hamid (cipla), dr k anji reddy (dr reddys) and the presidents of cii, ficci, assocham and phdcci. surprisingly, there is no representative for the booming telecom sector. heads of some psus also feature in the list of invitees. these include dk verma (scope), arvind pandey (sail) and k g ramachandran (bhel).
