On a conference call with IIM Ahmedabad, four second-year students analysed the Budget from the perspective of those on the threshold of corporate careers. â€œThe Rs 40,000 crore allotted for infrastructure projects is good news. Consulting firms like McKinsey and BCG are big in this area and it should raise their recruitment headcount,â€� said Navjeevan Khosla, a mechanical engineer with two yearsâ€™ work experience at ITC. â€œThe emphasis on agriculture will give stability to the growth rate, which is good for all of us,â€� said Sachin Kotak, a chartered accountant and a wannabe investment banker. â€œBut I wish thereâ€™d been something positive in it for the FIIs. The 0.15% turnover tax is going to kill day-trading,â€� he added. Then comes an exceptionally cheery voice on the line, from Hitesh Gosiya, one of the 25 students of IIM-Aâ€™s programme in Agri-Business Management (ABM). â€œThis pro-agriculture Budget is great for us. The seed, fertiliser and micro-credit companies that recruit ABM graduates will do well and expand. And after the big cut in excise theyâ€™ve received, we hope the tractor companies will recruit as well, â€� he said. Though students always look for the bright side, the campus view of the Budget depends on the kind of career one is working towards. At Delhi School of Economics, second-year students Neha Gupta and Pratibha Rathi are looking at a career in development economics. Needless to say, theyâ€™re upbeat about the fact that the FM has stressed the importance of the social sector over the corporate sector. She added, â€œIt was a very positive Budget and unveiled the human side of government.â€� At IIM Kolkata, second-year students Ajay Kumar and Sachin Gupta feel that the Budget has robbed industry of the feel-good factor thatâ€™s crucial to large scale hiring. â€œThis Budget has nothing for industry. Placements might not be as good as they were last year,â€� Kumar said. Pratik Trivedi at IIM Bangalore isnâ€™t too worried about the Budget derailing his career, which he expects will be in investment banking. â€œIâ€™m most excited by the FMâ€™s announcement about integrating the commodities and securities exchanges, and allowing banks to enter. That should create interesting opportunities,â€� he said.
