New Delhi: A high-level panel headed by country's first chief statistician Pronab Sen tasked to look into economic statistics has set up three subgroups to supervise the data collection process of the surveys on jobs, industry and services. The decision was taken at the panel's first meeting on Tuesday.

The standing committee on economic statistics (SCES), chaired by Sen, has subsumed in it four earlier standing committees on labour force statistics, industrial statistics, services sector and unincorporated sector enterprises. It has 27 members including academics and industry representatives.

It will review the existing framework of data sources, indicators and definitions of index of industrial production, periodic labour force survey, time use survey, economic census and unorganised sector statistics, among others.

“We have formed three subcommittees to oversee data collection of the ongoing surveys. This is the first step,” Sen said.

Biswanath Goldar, former professor at the Institute of Economic Growth, will chair the sub group on services while Sen himself will lead the subcommittee on the unincorporated sector enterprises. Jeemol Unni, professor of economics at Amrut Mody School of Management, Ahmedabad University, will head the subgroup on the periodic labour force survey.
