CHANDIGARH: Haryana government has decided to set up a Special Economic Zone at Garhi Harsaru in Gurgaon over an area of 3000 acres at an estimated cost of Rs 948 crore.
An official spokesman said here on Thursday that the SEZ, to be set up within the scope of export-import policy 2000, would help the economic growth-led development strategy besides promoting foreign direct investment and resultant exports.
Haryana State Industrial Development Corporation has conducted a feasibility study for the SEZ project, he said.
The SEZ site selected by HSIDC at Garhi Harsaru is within the National Capital Region and in close proximity to Gurgaon, offering readily available infrastructure such as housing, direct connectivity by roads and rails with other major metropolitan cities of the country, according to the spokesman.
The SEZ would cater to a number of industry segments such as auto and auto components, high precision industries, textiles, pharmaceuticals, IT industry-software and hardware, white goods and light engineering goods, he said.
"About 2,400 units would be set up in this zone, providing employment to 60,000 workers and Rs 42,000 crore export is expected to generate from this zone".
He said that despite global industrial recession, the exports from the state touched Rs 7035 crore during the year 2000-2001 as against Rs 4,163 during 1998-1999. PTI
