Rs 45 crore for Tamil Nadu banana cultivators

The subsidy is for banana cultivation in 25,000 hectares of land using drip irrigation.

SALEM: The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 45 crore to be distributed as subsidy for banana cultivation in 25,000 hectares of land using drip irrigation, a senior scientist of the National Research Centre for Banana said on Thursday.

As much as Rs 3.14 crores have been set apart for installing five HP motors and six HP motors for drip irrigation, B Padmanabhan of the centre said while attending a banana cultivation training held here by National Horticultural Society.

In Tamil Nadu 95,000 hectares of land were under banana cultivation and the production was 46.47 lakh tonnes, he said.

Subsidy was being provided for drip irrigation in coconut, tomato and cotton cultivation also, L Jeevajothi, scientist of Horticultural Society said.
