New Delhi: To ensure hassle-free traffic during the Commonwealth Games 2010, the Union Cabinet on Thursday cleared a proposal for a state-of-the-art traffic and communication network in NCR region and allocated Rs 200 crore for the scheme.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved implementation of the scheme of developing a hitech network and model traffic system of Delhi Police.

The plan aims to develop a new network to tackle the expected increase in traffic to and from satellite towns around Delhi. Under the scheme, Delhi Police will procure and install Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) for guidance of road users as well as to ensure smooth and safe movement of traffic.

Also, an integrated data communication network is proposed to be used for convergent services. Apart from the ITS scheme, the network will be shared by other key applications of Delhi Police.

Once the new system is in place, it will ensure more safety, better information and reduce travel time for motorists. In the first phase, government wants to cover 87 roads (around 210km) and around 220 signalled intersections. Latter , the scheme will take into account a road length of 30,000km and around 500 signalled intersections.
