Rice cheaper for Kerala BPL families

Kerala government on Wednesday unveiled yet another populist scheme by offering 25 kilograms of rice at a price of Rs three per kg to all below poverty line (BPL) families.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala government on Wednesday unveiled yet another populist scheme by offering 25 kilograms of rice at a price of Rs three per kg to all below poverty line (BPL) families.

Talking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said all the 20.48 lakh BPL families in the state would be benefited by the scheme which would bring an additional burden of Rs.12 crore to the exchequer.

Till now, all BPL families were getting rice at a price of Rs 6.20 per kg.

Already about 4.78 lakh families in BPL list were getting rice at Rs.three under the Andhodya Annadhana Yojana (AAY) and "with the new scheme, all BPL families will get rice upto 25 kgs at Rs.three per kg", he said.

The cost of the AAY scheme was being met by the Centre, he added.

Both the ruling United Democratic Front and the Congress state unit had recently wanted the government to come out with populist schemes in the wake to set back the Front had received in the by-poll and local bodies elections. Distribution of rice at low price to BPL families and cut in power tariff were some of them.

Last week, the government announced reduction in the power tariff by 20 paise per unit to domestic and certain categories of commercial consumers with effect from January one.
