Reforms via executive orders: FM
Finance minister P Chidambaram on Thursday made a strong pitch for political consensus to carry forward economic reforms.
Mr Chidambaram said reform measures that can be carried out through executive orders, rather than Parliamentary approval, will be pushed forward by the UPA government.
I would reach out to all parties to evolve a consensus, he said. His assessment was that most political parties except one section (read the Left) were in favour of reforms. Mr Chidambaram said he is confident for the passage of the bills as leaders of parties which accounted for nearly 400 members in Lok Sabha were in favour of reforms.

Today, tempers are running high. That is what I sense from reading newspapers. Everybody is furious with everyone else, but hopefully these tempers will cool down by the time Parliament reassembles. Then, I would be able to reach out to every section for support to these bills, he said at the launch of the book Escape from the Benevolent Zookeepers The Best of Swaminomics by Swaminathan S Anklesaria Aiyar, consulting editor of The Economic Times.
Former finance minister Jaswant Singh said carrying reforms forward was not a easy job since the political system did not support such measures often. Mindset change was the key to implementation of successful reforms, he added.
Each of these Bills have been held up by disagreement on just one clause. I assure you that I will reach out to every section of Parliament and rally their support for passage of these Bills, Mr Chidambaram said. He indicated Congress would continue to support economic reforms even if it was in the opposition, he hinted.
