Divestment of Bhel a closed chapter, says CPM
CPM general secretary Prakash Karat today declared that disinvestment in Bhel was a “closed chapter”.
Although Congress president Sonia Gandhi had promised to keep the Bhel issue in abeyance, the government was yet to take any follow up action. On their part, the Left has made it clear that their participation in the coordination panel was contingent upon the governments complete compliance to their demand of no disinvestment in navaratnas.
Mr Prakash Karats statement today clearly indicated that the Left would stick to this position. the CPM general secretary, a critic of the economic and strategic policies of the UPA government, today also indicated the Lefts resolve to intervene strongly in the ruling regimes policy matrix.
Given this, there is expectation that the government will soon act on the promise given by Ms Sonia Gandhi.
Already, the government has initiated several steps to appease the Left. The decision to handover the CAGs adverse observations on the sale of Centaur hotels to the CBI is one one such effort. The Left has been demanding action against its bug bear Arun Shourie.
But on the Lefts opposition to disinvestment, governement leaders fear, will sap the enthusiasm of pro-reform ministers to come up with bold measures. The fact that they will have to check out virtually every decision with a group that exists outside the government will make the policy movements quite tough.
