PM directs Power Ministry to speed up rural power programmes

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has directed the Ministry of Power to expedite rural infrastructure development programmes as envisaged in UPA's Common Minimum Programme.

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has directed the Ministry of Power to expedite rural infrastructure development programmes as envisaged in UPA's Common Minimum Programme.

Reviewing the thrust areas for the power sector, Singh directed the Power Ministry to ensure that formal clearances to Bharat Nirman and Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana are completed in the next fortnight.

"The UPA government is fully committed to Bharat Nirman and Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana and all steps should be taken in this regard," Singh was quoted as saying in an official release.

With the Standing Committee of State Power Ministers and the sub-committee under the Finance Minister has been constituted to look into financing issues, the power sector would be able to "achieve full momentum necessary to sustain high rate of economic growth", he said.

Singh said urgent steps need to be taken to operationalise the decisions taken in the Chief Ministers' Conference on power sector held in May this year.

Singh has asked states as well as the Power Ministry to reduce thefts, raise generation capacity and attract private investment to provide electricity to all households by 2012.

The sector required a "crash programme" for capacity addition to eliminate shortages by 2012. Singh had pegged the investment needed at over Rs 600,000 crore during the 11th Plan period.
