Panchayats to get funds on the basis of performance: Aiyar

The Government is trying to fix an eligibility criterion for proper accountability, efficiency and transparency of the Panchayat funds.

NEW DELHI: At the introductory session of the Core Committee to draft charter of Panchayat Convention in New Delhi on Thursday, the Minister of Panchayati Raj, Mani Shankar Aiyar, hoped that the Panchayati Raj convention will help move the implementation of the Panchayati Raj system efficiently.

The Government is trying to fix an eligibility criterion for proper accountability, efficiency and transparency of the Panchayat funds.

The Minister said, " His Ministry has been working closely with States to work out a national consensus on the measures to be taken to strengthen Panchayati Raj. More than mandated 33 per cent women are being elected to the Panchayats."

He said, "We hope that the funds for Panchayats are reach well in time."

A committee examined the feasibility of preparing a data base account of all the two lakh forty thousand Panchayati Raj Institutions and a feed back mechanism.

During the two-day deliberations, five commiittees will deal with various issues and probelms faced by panchayats for preparing a draft charter of Panchayati Raj Convention.
