Pact to assess potential for natural gas use in Puducherry
Puducherry government has signed an agreement with the GAIL for joint efforts in assessing the potential demand for natural gas and allied products and their utilisation in different sectors, including transport, in the Union Territory.
The agreement envisaged exploration of possibility of utilisation of natural gas like CNG in transport sector and in the industrial sector and use of LPG in the domestic sector.
Puducherry Industries and Commerce Secretary T M Balakrishnan and GAIL's Director (Marketing) B C Tripathi signed the agreement in the presence of Lt Governor Mukut Mithi, Industries Minister V Vaithilingam, Education and Transport Minister M O H F Shahjahan, Chairman and Managing Director of GAIL Dr U D.Choubey at the Raj Nivas.
Vaithilingam told reporters later that it was the intention of the territorial government to have a clean environment and the use of CNG in the transport sector would enable it to realise the goal.
Under the agreement, a joint comprehensive study would be launched soon to assess the potential areas for utilisation of natural gas, he said adding around Rs five crore would be allocated for the purpose.
Choubey said that besides the study, there would also be a coordinated approach in laying of pipelines for distribution of the natural gas, LPG and promotion of joint venture for gas distribution projects for domestic and transport sectors.
The demand potential in Puducherry for gas would be prioritised and projects for the implementation would be taken up through join efforts.
