Over Rs 1,800 cr for scholarship to minority students

Over Rs 1,868.50 crore has been kept in the 11th five-year plan for providing scholarship to eligible students of class I to Xth belonging to the minority communities, the Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday.

NEW DELHI: Over Rs 1,868.50 crore has been kept in the 11th five-year plan for providing scholarship to eligible students of class I to Xth belonging to the minority communities, the Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday.

The centrally sponsored scheme of pre-matric scholarship will be implemented by the Ministry of Minority Affairs, Minister of State for Human Resource Development M A A Fatmi said while replying to a query.

To another query, Fatmi said of 2,180 sanctioned Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, 1,724 KGBVs are already operational.

"One of the major reasons for delay in the functioning of the vidyalayas is unavailability of land for the construction of the schools and court cases in some states," the minister said.

The government is monitoring the scheme regularly, he added.
