An ordinance would be promulgated in Kerala to facilitate action against unauthorised raw cashew roasting units which do not pay wages and other benefits to workers.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An ordinance would be promulgated in Kerala to facilitate action against unauthorised raw cashew roasting units which do not pay wages and other benefits to workers.

A decision to this effect was taken by the state Cabinet on Wednesday.

The proposed ordinance would have a provision for sentencing the owner of the erring units for two years of imprisonment, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan told a press conference here after the cabinet meeting.

Besides, the equipment and materials of the units would be confiscated by the government, he said.

Referring to other cabinet decisions, he said the civil supplies corporation and the Consumer Federation would take up measures to check the rise in prices of rice in the open market in the state.

Civil Supplies Minister C Divakaran and Co-operation Minister G Sudhakaran would prepare an action plan to contain the price rise of rice after consultations with Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac, he said.

An expert committee would be constituted to study and submit report on the recommendations for setting up an Inland Water Authority for Inland waterways in the state.

The objective of the authority was to speed up the waterway development in the state, he said.
