Only 33 drugs to stay under price control

it will be a mixed bag for the pharma industry. pharma multinationals, including glaxosmithklime, pfizer, parke-davis and domestic drug majors such as cipla, dr reddy's, ranbaxy, torrent and zydus cadila, are expected to gain enormously with the chemicals and fertilisers ministry drawing up the list of drugs which will be moved out of the price control regime. on the other hand, novartis, hoechst and alkem will be hit due to the addition of some drugs in the new list. according to official sources, the final list will have only 33 drugs under the price control as against the existing 74. of the 74, the status of seven drugs are under dispute. the pruning of the list to 33 would mean that the total market share of price-controlled drugs will come down to about 22 per cent from the current 38 per cent. the new list will now go to the cabinet committee on economic affairs for approval. it is expected to be announced in the first half of january. according to sources, the major drugs slated to go out of the price control list include leading antibiotics ciprofloxacin, toxycycline, cefadroxyl and tetracycline, cvs formulations such as atenolol and tyltitazem and amlotipine, anti-ulcer drugs such as omeprezole and ranitidine, anti-tb drug ethambutol and anti-asthma drug salbutamol. the drugs which are slated to come under the new price control list include pain reliever diclofena sodium (novartis and alkem are the leading players in this) antibiotic formulation framycetine (hoechst) and injection antibiotic sufodaxine (alkem). according to sources, sales turnover of rs 20 crore or below or 50 per cent market share of a single brand are the basic criteria based on which the new list is being drawn up.
