OGNC, SAIL, BSNL etc to wait more for Maharatna status

NEW DELHI: The Cabinet on Wednesday did not take up the proposal of the Department of Public Enterprises to grant Maharatna status to blue-chip Central public sector enterprises as the minister was not available.

"The Cabinet did not take up the proposal for granting Maharatna status as Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh was not in town," a senior official said.

The proposal was originally scheduled to come up for discussion and decision in the Cabinet today.

The Department of Public Enterprises proposal to grant Maharatna status seect CPSUs like ONGC, SAIL, BSNL, NTPC and CIL is aimed at providing and greater investment autonomy to these PSUs.
